What is the history of Kamyanets-Podilskyi?

Kamianets-Podilskyi traces its origins to 1062, one of the oldest cities in western Ukraine. The Smotrych River made its defence. Its site on a rock island wrapped by the river gorge gave the town a natural fortress, and successive rulers raised the Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle and its ring of towers to hold the crossing.

Over the centuries Ruthenian, Polish, Armenian, and other communities settled the rock, each leaving churches and quarters that still stand. The old town became a meeting of faiths and trades, a layered heritage read in its stone. The Armenian Bastion and the market square of Virmenskyi rynok recall the Armenian merchants who once traded here, while the Saint George Cathedral, the Dominican convent church, and St Nicholas's Church mark the many Christian traditions of the town.

War tested the fortress often. The Papska Tower, the Rozhanka Tower, and the other bastions of the castle survived siege after siege to make Kamianets-Podilskyi one of the great preserved fortress towns of the region.
