What is the history of Chornomors’k?
Kurgans came first. Long before any quay was cut into the shore, burial mounds stood on the open ground above the Sukhyi Estuary, and the country around belonged to the steppe rather than to any settlement. War reached this coast before the town did.
Two common graves at Chornomors'k hold soldiers killed in the defence and the liberation of Odesa, one of 41 and one of 27, dug into ground that carried no city. Then came the port. Chornomors'k was founded in 1952 under the name Illichivsk, laid out to serve a sea trade port on the Sukhyi Estuary, and the streets followed the berths rather than the other way round.
Growth was quick and deliberate. A ferry crossing opened between Illichivsk and Varna, and markers were raised for the fifth year of the crossing and the fifth year of the Illichivsk sea trade port itself, small monuments to a town measuring its age in port anniversaries. The Soviet name did not survive.
Illichivsk became Chornomors'k, and the city took charge of the Chornomorsk urban hromada, one of Ukraine's hromadas, within Odesa Raion in Odesa Oblast. Bilyi Art Museum stands among those quays, graves, and anniversary stones.
