About SawtelleWhere to stay in Sawtelle
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The Sawtelle Veterans Home sets the ground for a stay here. Beds fall inside West Los Angeles rather than a resort quarter, so the choice runs between the streets the Pacific Land Company developed as the City of Sawtelle and the outer blocks that face the rest of the Westside. It is a small neighborhood.
Under three square kilometres hold the whole of Sawtelle, which keeps every part of it within reach of the same handful of streets that carried the city before Los Angeles annexed it.
About Sawtelle
What are the main landmarks in Sawtelle?
Sawtelle has nothing the register calls a landmark. What the neighborhood has instead is the Sawtelle Veterans Home, founded as the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers and the reason a settlement gathered on this part of the Westside at all. The Veterans Home is the entire list.
Anything else worth a walk lies outside the boundary, in West Los Angeles or the wider City of Los Angeles, since the record for Sawtelle names no church, museum or house of its own.
What is the history of Sawtelle?
Sawtelle was a city before it was a neighborhood. The Pacific Land Company developed the ground and named it for its manager, W. E. Sawtelle, while the settlement itself gathered around the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, later the Sawtelle Veterans Home. Incorporation came in 1899.
The City of Sawtelle kept its independence for fewer than 30 years before the City of Los Angeles annexed it, which is how a chartered city in California became one more district of West Los Angeles.
Where is Sawtelle?
Sawtelle covers under three square kilometres of West Los Angeles, a compact block of the Westside inside the City of Los Angeles in California.
