Sun City, Menifee — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Lawn bowls, shuffleboard and quiet ranch streets mark Sun City, the Del Webb retirement community of 1962 in the northwest corner of Menifee, California.

About Sun City

Where to stay in Sun City

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Sun City keeps its beds on the freeway edge, along Encanto Drive at the McCall Boulevard exit of Interstate 215. Inside the community the streets are residential, laid out for people who live here rather than for visitors, so the roadside motels on the frontage road do the work. Menifee holds the alternative. Its newer centre at Newport Road, a few minutes south, carries the modern chain hotels, while Perris is the nearest separate town north on the same freeway.

About Sun City

What are the main landmarks in Sun City?

Sun City centres on the corner of Bradley Road and Cherry Hills Boulevard, where Del Webb opened the community's first shopping centre in July 1962. The Sun City Civic Association campus stands nearby at 26850 Sun City Boulevard, its gates enclosing Webb Hall, an outdoor Greek theatre, two pools, lawn bowling greens, and indoor shuffleboard courts. The Sun City Library sits at 26982 Cherry Hills Boulevard.

St. Vincent Ferrer is the Catholic parish on Murrieta Road. It has served the community since 1966. The Kay Ceniceros Senior Center runs the city's senior programmes from Evans Road.

What is the history of Sun City?

Sun City was planned in 1960 as Del Webb's second retirement community, after the one he had opened in Arizona. Grading began in December 1961 on ranch land he had bought from farmers in the Menifee Valley, and the place opened that June with 272 homes sold in three days. Golf followed the houses.

The Cherry Hills Golf Course opened in 1963, and the North Golf Course on McCall Boulevard in 1975, the year after Webb died. Sun City stayed an unincorporated census place for the rest of the century. That ended on October 1, 2008, when it joined Quail Valley and the surrounding Menifee Valley communities to form the city of Menifee.

Where is Sun City?

Sun City takes the northwest corner of Menifee, cut through by Interstate 215, with Perris immediately north and Quail Valley over the western line.
