About Menifee

The name comes from a miner.

What is Menifee known for?

Luther Menifee Wilson worked this ground in the 19th century, and the settlement that took his middle name stayed inside Riverside County for more than a hundred years before it became a city in its own right. Incorporation came in 2008. That leaves Menifee with a long settlement record and a short civic one, an unusual pairing even in the Inland Empire.

What are the main landmarks in Menifee?

A single museum makes up the list. The Orange Empire Railway Museum is the named site attached to Menifee in this part of Riverside County, and what it keeps is rolling stock rather than a civic building of any grandeur. The rest is ground.

Open country and residential blocks fill out a city of roughly 121 square kilometres, which leaves the wider road network of the Inland Empire to supply whatever else an itinerary needs.

What is the history of Menifee?

Settlement came in the 19th century. Luther Menifee Wilson, a miner working this ground, gave the place his middle name, and that naming is the oldest fixed point in the record of what is now a city of Riverside County. The name outlasted the mining.

It stayed attached to the district through the long stretch when Menifee was a name on the map rather than a municipality with a council of its own. Incorporation waited until 2008. For most of its existence the settlement was administered as part of Riverside County, and the city that stands now was assembled from ground already lived on for well over a century.

The Inland Empire grew around it. Civic history in Menifee is therefore short while the history of its ground is not, and the two do not line up the way they do in the older cities of California. The Orange Empire Railway Museum holds the mechanical past.

Its collection speaks for the railway decades of this part of the Inland Empire, which is the nearest thing the area keeps to a formal account of the years between the miner's arrival and the charter.

Where is Menifee?

Roughly 121 square kilometres, much of it open. Menifee takes a wide piece of Riverside County inside the Inland Empire, which is a great deal of ground for a city whose charter dates from 2008. Density is not the story.

The built area sits among open country rather than filling the boundary, and the Orange Empire Railway Museum lies out towards the edge of that pattern rather than at any centre of it.

What is the climate of Menifee?

The Inland Empire runs hot. Menifee lies in the subtropical band north of the equator, well back from the coast in Riverside County, where the warm season stretches long and the built area gives little shade of its own. Mornings are the workable hours.

Anything outdoors, the Orange Empire Railway Museum included, comes easier before the middle of the day, and the open country around the city offers nothing much in the way of cover.

How do you get to Menifee?

A car is the only practical way into Menifee. Menifee sits within the Inland Empire, where the road network rather than a harbour or a river decides how any place is reached, and the city's own streets are entered from the routes crossing Riverside County. The museum is the exception.

Orange Empire Railway Museum is where the railway of this part of California survives as a collection, standing apart from the driving that gets almost everyone else here.
