The Atlanta History Center holds the headline sights. Its grounds gather the Swan House, a 1928 mansion of curving stairs and formal gardens, alongside the far older Tullie Smith House, a plantation-plan farmhouse moved here from the Georgia countryside. Estate homes fill the ridges beyond.
The May Patterson Goodrum House and the Albert E. Thornton House rank among the mansions that first gave the district its reputation for old money and quiet wealth. Faith shaped Buckhead as well, at Buckhead Church and Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
What is the history of Buckhead?
Buckhead grew up around a country tavern before Atlanta's streetcars pulled it into the city. Wealth followed. Through the early twentieth century, cotton and railroad fortunes built the estates that still line its ridges, among them the Swan House, completed in 1928 for the Inman family and now the centrepiece of the Atlanta History Center.
Older stories survive alongside them, in the Tullie Smith House farmhouse and the New Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church and Cemetery.
