Sweet Auburn sits just east of downtown Atlanta, and it is a heritage district rather than a hotel quarter. Beds here are few. Most visitors book rooms in the neighbouring downtown core and walk the short blocks east along Auburn Avenue to reach Ebenezer Baptist Church and the older commercial row.

Ebenezer Baptist Church anchors Sweet Auburn. Its historic sanctuary, raised in 1922, drew the congregation that Martin Luther King Jr. would later co-pastor beside his father, and the brick building still faces Auburn Avenue. The old commercial blocks around it once held Black-owned banks, newspaper offices, and nightclubs that together made the avenue a centre of enterprise.

What is the history of Sweet Auburn?
Sweet Auburn grew as the commercial heart of Black Atlanta. Ebenezer Baptist Church settled at its Auburn Avenue address in 1914, and its brick sanctuary followed in 1922, giving the district a spiritual anchor that endured through decades of segregation. The civic leader John Wesley Dobbs coined the name.
He called the street Sweet Auburn to mark its standing as a national concentration of Black commerce and wealth, an avenue of banks, churches, and papers unmatched elsewhere. Martin Luther King Jr. was born a short walk away and grew up within its parish.
