SouthPark Mall anchors the district. It draws shoppers from across Charlotte to the stores and office towers wrapped around the crossing of Sharon Road and Fairview Road, and its expansion set the pattern for the retail core that followed. Two older buildings survive the growth.
The Frank Ramsay McNinch House recalls the district's earlier fabric, while the Church at Charlotte gives SouthPark a large congregation on its edge, both standing apart from the glass and parking decks that define the modern quarter.
What is the history of SouthPark?
The district takes its name from its mall. SouthPark Mall opened in 1970 on farmland south of uptown Charlotte, and the shopping centre pulled offices, restaurants, and further retail into the fields around the junction of Sharon Road and Fairview Road until a full commercial quarter had formed. The build-out after 1970 came quickly.
Successive expansions turned SouthPark Mall into one of the region's largest shopping destinations, and the surrounding blocks filled with towers and hotels, leaving the Frank Ramsay McNinch House as one of the few reminders of the land that stood here before 1970.
