What are the main landmarks in Anderson Mill?

Anderson Mill Road is the spine of the district, though the mill that named it stands west of here on Cypress Creek, where a replica and the 1936 centennial marker look out over the arm of Lake Travis that drowned the original site near Volente. What the streets hold is parkland. El Salido Park spreads a greenbelt, pools and courts along El Salido Parkway, and Anderson Mill Park sits at Lake Creek Parkway and Schoolhouse Road.

Seven neighbourhood parks and close to six miles of hike-and-bike trail follow Lake Creek and Pecan Creek. Anderson Mill Elementary and Noel Grisham Middle School stand near the centre.

What is the history of Anderson Mill?

Anderson Mill takes its name from Thomas Anderson, who came to Texas in the 1850s and raised a mill on Cypress Creek that ground gunpowder for the Confederacy, then corn, then cotton. A post office opened in 1876. After Anderson died in 1894 the settlement emptied out, and the name went quiet for nearly eighty years.

Suburban Austin reached this ground in 1973, when it was organised as Williamson County Municipal Utility District Number 1; houses went up from 1975, the district took the name Anderson Mill in 1988, and the City of Austin annexed it on the last day of 2008. The parks stayed local, kept by a limited district the neighbourhood taxes itself for.

Anderson Mill straddles the Travis County and Williamson County line on the Jollyville Plateau, between Ranch Road 620 and Research Boulevard.
