Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Most island trips pass through Porlamar. Even travellers booked into a resort elsewhere on Margarita Island come in for the shops and the restaurants, which makes a night or two in the city a reasonable way to open or close a stay. Downtown Porlamar is the sensible base.
Streets around the iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari carry the retail and the dining, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Francisco Narváez is close enough to fold into an afternoon. Nightlife concentrates here too. La Asunción offers the alternative.
The state capital sits about ten kilometres away, quieter than Porlamar, with La Asunción Cathedral and the Santa Rosa de la Eminencia Castle to fill a day that is not about shopping. Pilgrims choose differently again. The Basilica of Our Lady of El Valle pulls its own traffic, and beds on that side are worth holding when the calendar of the devotion comes round.
Fixtures at Nueva Esparta Stadium do the same on a smaller scale, filling rooms across Mariño for one night and releasing them the next morning. Porlamar is where arrivals and departures happen. Book with the calendar, not the map.

What is Porlamar known for?
Travellers booked into a resort elsewhere on Margarita Island still come into Porlamar for those three, which is why the city functions as the island's high street as much as its port. It is also a working seaport. Nueva Esparta counts eleven municipalities, and Porlamar is the capital of Mariño, the largest among them.

What is the history of Porlamar?
Porlamar dates from 1553. A date that early belongs to the first century of settlement in the Caribbean Sea, on an island lying off the South American mainland rather than on it. The sea explains the rest.
Margarita Island is one of three islands that make up Nueva Esparta, and a harbour on its southern coast was always likely to become the trading centre of the group. Fortification followed trade. Santa Rosa de la Eminencia Castle survives from the period when an island in these waters needed defending, and it is the clearest structure left from that stretch of the record.
Administration went elsewhere. La Asunción took the role of state capital and kept it, about ten kilometres from Porlamar, while Porlamar took the commerce and the port and grew into the larger place. Mariño is the municipality that resulted.
