Where to stay in Khōst

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

The city divides east and west. Matun, the older name for the bazaar ground that served the Khost plain, sits a short run east of the present centre, and the eastern districts carry the forests, the settlements, and Khost International Airport with them. Beds follow that weight.

West of the centre the ground turns barren and thinly worked, and Hinduwan Kalay, the walled quarter where the city's Hindu families settled, marks about the limit of that side's built-up run. Students set a second rhythm. Shaikh Zayed University keeps its intake here from across Loya Paktia, so term weeks tighten rooms in a way the office calendar of Khost Province does not, and Khost Cricket Stadium adds its own crowds whenever a fixture lands.

Khost City Ground takes the football. Protection posts once went up in the district centres around Khōst, and the one at Mandozai carried a medical clinic with it, which settles an outlying night more surely than any room count. Anyone bound for the Ghulam Khan border crossing to the south, or driving the Gardez road toward Kabul, will find Khōst the last place offering real choice, since the surrounding districts of Velāyat-e Khowst run to villages and little else.

Plan the night in the city. Drive out from it in the morning.

About Khōst

What is Khōst known for?

Cricket carries the city's name furthest. Khost Cricket Stadium was built with financial support from Germany, and the Afghanistan national cricket team has drawn Nawroz Mangal, Dawlat Zadran, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from these streets. Trade is the other reputation.

Khōst handles much of the country's commerce with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the frontier, and pine nuts leave the province as one of its noted export products. Shaikh Zayed University keeps the region's students here.

What are the main landmarks in Khōst?

Sport built most of what stands out. Khost City Stadium, the multi-purpose ground also called Khost City Ground, takes football and other sports, while Khost Cricket Stadium went up with financial support from Germany and opened before a crowd recorded as the largest for any sport played in Afghanistan. Shaikh Zayed University holds the third corner.

Khost International Airport marks the eastern edge, and Hinduwan Kalay, walled on the west, is the quarter the city's Hindu families kept.

What is the history of Khōst?

Khōst took its present shape by policy. The Persian account puts that after 1954, when border strategy governed the choice, with Miranshah and Parachinar facing the city from the Pakistani side while the plain's central bazaar still stood at Matun to the east. Fighting predates the street grid.

British forces under Lord Roberts pushed in from what is now Pakistan during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and roughly eight thousand raiders of the Mangal tribe struck at their weakly protected supply convoys. Roberts had eleven Mangal villages sacked and burnt in reprisal. His opponents in the British Parliament turned on him once word reached home, and the British withdrew when the conflict closed.

Three rebellions punctuate the years between 1856 and 1925. The Khost rebellions ran from 1856 to 1857, again in 1912, and last across 1924 and 1925, each repeating the refusal of outside control that the Mangal tribe had long made its habit. Then came a siege of more than eight years.

Mujahideen seized the only land route between Khōst and Gardez early in the Soviet-Afghan War, stalling the advance, and the Khost Airfield later staged Mil Mi-8 transports into the assault on the Zhawar Kili cave complex. By April 1995 the Taliban held the city. American forces built Forward Operating Base Chapman outside it after 2001, a Provincial Reconstruction Team worked beside paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division, and the city changed hands again in 2021 as the twenty-eighth provincial capital taken.

The June 2022 Afghanistan earthquake killed at least twenty-nine here.

Where is Khōst?

Khōst spreads across a plateau in eastern Afghanistan, roughly 150 km south of Kabul, and the tableland runs east about forty kilometres to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The valley floor has a name. Khost Bowl lies lower than the highlands ringing it, with peaks rising sharply to the north and gentler country to the south nearer the frontier.

Forest and settlement fill the eastern districts of Khost District while the western ones stay barren and lightly built, and water courses take a twentieth of the surface.

What is the climate of Khōst?

The South Asian monsoon does the unusual work here. Moist air pushes up the valley from the southeast, off the lower ground toward Miranshah, so most of the 475 mm of annual rain arrives in summer instead of winter, a pattern almost nowhere else in Afghanistan shares. Khost Bowl keeps the cold shallow.

January stays milder than at Parachinar, Gardez, or Sharana up in the surrounding highlands, though frost still settles in the early mornings and the classification remains semi-arid. Droughts follow a failed monsoon.

How do you get to Khōst?

Khost International Airport handles the air side, out on the eastern edge of the city. Road is the older answer. The Gardez route north is the historic land link, the one mujahideen cut during the Soviet-Afghan War, and it still carries traffic on toward Kabul some 150 km away.

South, the Ghulam Khan border crossing sits about 32 km off, opening the run into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Khost Airfield served the military rather than travellers.
