What is the history of Berat?
Berat has watched the Osum for millennia. An Illyrian fortress crowned the hill long before Rome came, and the Byzantines rebuilt the great castle whose walls still ring the summit. Faith filled the citadel.
Within its gates the townsfolk raised a dozen churches, among them the Holy Trinity Church and the Dormition of Saint Mary Cathedral, painted with icons by the master Onufri. The Ottomans gave the town its face. Under their long rule the white houses spread down the slopes in the tiered quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, their rows of windows staring across the river, and mosques rose among them below the castle.
Christians and Muslims lived side by side. The two quarters faced each other across the Osum, joined by an old stone bridge, and the icons of Onufri were gathered into the Onufri Iconographic Museum. The whole old city was later named a treasure of the world.
Berat still climbs the gorge as it has for ages.

Berat lies inland in the heart of Albania. Roads wind to it through the mountains from Tirana and the port of Durrës, and buses run in from the coast and the capital. No railway serves the town.
