What is the history of Elbasan?
Elbasan rose on the Roman road. The ancient Via Egnatia ran through here from the Adriatic to the East, and a Roman station called Scampa stood on the route. The Ottomans built the castle.
In the fourteen-hundreds the Turks raised a great fortress on the river to hold the road, and a town grew within and below its walls. The castle held a mingled town. Within the walls stood a mosque and churches side by side, and the people kept their crafts and their faiths through the years.
Steel came in the modern age. Under the old regime a huge steelworks rose beside the town, and Elbasan grew into an industrial city, yet it kept its castle, its clock tower, and its old quarter. The walls still stand by the river.
