Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The gorge sets the sides. Ashtarak spreads along the left bank of the Kasagh, and the old streets on that rim hold Karmravor, Tsiranavor Church of Ashtarak and Saint Mariane Church of Ashtarak close enough together that one walk covers them. Two edges, one small town.
The gorge rim keeps Karmravor and its neighbours within a walk, while the through-road side keeps the car close, and in Ashtarak that is most of the decision. Yerevan pulls the other way. Twenty kilometres of road link the two, which makes Ashtarak a quieter base for anyone working in the capital by day, and it also means the town's beds compete with a far bigger supply down the road.
The Mughni end reads differently. Saint Gevorg Monastery of Mughni stands outside the built-up part, and that edge suits you if the monastery is the reason for the trip rather than Saint Sarkis Church of Ashtarak or Spitakavor Church of Ashtarak. Drivers should think about the crossroad.
Routes of the Yerevan-Gyumri-Vanadzor triangle meet at Ashtarak, so a room with parking near the through-road beats a central one for anyone carrying on to Gyumri or Vanadzor the next morning.

What is the history of Ashtarak?
The 7th century anchors it. Karmravor was raised then, and it has come down in better condition than any other Armenian church of that century, which sets stone building on the left bank of the Kasagh long before anything else the town keeps. More churches followed.
Tsiranavor Church of Ashtarak, Spitakavor Church of Ashtarak, Saint Sarkis Church of Ashtarak and Saint Mariane Church of Ashtarak each mark a later stage of the same settlement, and the Tsiranavor chapel of Karbi carries the pattern into the next village. All of it sits on one bank. Mughni built apart.

Then the roads decided the rest. Ashtarak took the administrative centre of Aragatsotn Province, and that role rests on the crossroad it holds for the Yerevan-Gyumri-Vanadzor triangle rather than on the scale of the town itself.
Where is Ashtarak?
The Kasagh cuts through. Ashtarak lies on the left bank of that river, along the gorge it has carved, and the drop of that gorge divides the church quarter from the ground opposite more sharply than any street does. Yerevan is 20 km off.
The town sits in Aragatsotn Province, close enough to the capital that one road serves both, far enough that the gorge and not the city sets the shape of the place.
What is the climate of Ashtarak?
The Kasagh gorge does half the work. Its cut holds shade below the church rim through part of the day, which counts for something in a town where bare stone takes the sun from morning on. Ashtarak keeps to that rim.
Beyond it the town stands well inland in Aragatsotn, far from any moderating water, so the year swings hard between the hot months and the cold ones.
How do you get to Ashtarak?
The triangle passes through. Ashtarak holds the crossroad where the routes of the Yerevan-Gyumri-Vanadzor triangle meet, which is why traffic between three cities runs past a town of this size at all. Yerevan sits at the near end.
Twenty kilometres of road separate the two, so most arrivals come up from the capital, and the Kasagh gorge marks the town well before the first church appears.
