What is the history of Vanadzor?
Vanadzor began as a village of mineral springs in the Lori hills. Armenians and others settled the warm valley long ago, drawn by the healing waters and the passes north to Georgia, and a market town grew slowly among the mountains. The springs gave it its first fame.
Travellers came to take the waters at Vanadzor before ever a factory rose in the valley. Under Soviet rule it grew into an industrial city. Renamed Kirovakan, it filled with chemical works and rail yards and swelled to become the third city of Armenia, its slopes lined with new blocks.
Then the works fell silent. The end of the Soviet Union and a great earthquake in 1988 struck the region hard, and the factories closed, but the city kept its museums, its churches, and its springs. The green valley holds it still.

Vanadzor lies in the Pambak river valley in Lori, in the mountainous north of Armenia. The city fills a wide basin where wooded ranges close in on all sides, watered by the Pambak and its mountain streams, on the road that climbs from the Debed gorge toward Lake Sevan. Steep green forests rise around.

What is the climate of Vanadzor?
Vanadzor has a cool highland climate wetter than most of Armenia. Warm summers and cold, snowy winters cross the mountain valley, and the ranges around catch more rain and cloud than the lowlands, keeping the slopes green. Mist hangs in the basin at dawn.

How do you get to Vanadzor?
Vanadzor lies in northern Armenia, on the main road and rail line from Yerevan to Georgia. Trains and buses climb to it up the Debed gorge and over the passes from the capital, and roads branch to the Lori monasteries. Mountain roads run on to the spa towns.
