Where to stay in Itzling

How the choice of base plays out on the ground.

The railway made this place. Itzling sits between the Salzach on the west and the Westbahn on the east, with the Hauptbahnhof tracks closing it to the southeast, so a bed here is a bed beside the yards rather than beside the old town. The Plainberg rises to the north.

Above it stands the pilgrimage church of Maria Plain, which belonged to Salzburg for eleven years before being traded back to Bergheim in 1950, and the strip taken in exchange is what is now called Itzling-Nord. Walking into the centre takes a while.

About Itzling

What are the main landmarks in Itzling?

One farmhouse survives from the old hamlet. The former Höschmanngut at Itzlinger Hauptstraße 58 is the only house left in the settlement core from around 1800, when Itzling was six small farms with no church of its own and two mills, the Grabenmühle and the Kreuzermühle, on the Alterbach. The church came a century later.

Anthony of Padua was consecrated here in 1903 and Itzling got its own parish in 1912, by which time the village had turned into a railway workers' town. Clay under the moor left its mark. A bed of loam more than forty metres thick lay beneath the peat and was dug for brick, leaving ponds and pools east of the village that were nearly all filled in again.

What is the history of Itzling?

A duke gave it away in 711. Theodbert, son of Theodo, handed the place to the bishop of Salzburg on being made duke of Bavaria, and the name Uzilinga, a diminutive of Utto with the Bavarian -ing ending, appears in the Notitia Arnonis of 790 with twenty hides to its name. Then it was forgotten for a thousand years.

The main road north ran along the far bank through Liefering-Rott to Laufen, so Itzling stayed a few fishermen on the edge of the Itzlinger Moos, and in 1552 the whole tract outside the Linzertor held only twelve houses. Drainage brought the farms. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau opened the boggy ground for settlement, and archbishop Paris von Lodron had the western Schallmoos drained between 1625 and 1644 by the soldiers quartered there, cutting the Fürstenweg across the moor that is now the Vogelweiderstraße.

The lines changed everything. The Westbahn of 1860, the Giselabahn of 1875, the Ischlerbahn that ran from 1891 to 1957 and the Lamprechtshausen line of 1896 turned a hamlet into a railway town that grew tenfold between 1868 and 1910.

Where is Itzling?

Itzling lies between the Salzach on the west, the slopes of the Plainberg and the A1 on the north, the Westbahn on the east and the August-Gruber-Straße on the south, its Katastralgemeinde running wider than the Stadtteil into Schallmoos, Liefering and Lehen.
