Where to stay in Ascot

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Ascot rewards visitors who like their base quiet and green. The suburb is largely residential, a rise of grand homes and shaded streets set above the racing flats of Eagle Farm Racecourse, so rooms are limited within its bounds. Hamilton, on the southern edge, gathers the nearest hotels, while Fortitude Valley, a short way south-west, adds the busier late-night quarter. Book down the hill.

From either, Ascot's racecourse and leafy avenues sit only a few minutes away.

Few places to stay in Ascot — most visitors book in Hamilton or Fortitude Valley nearby.

About Ascot

What are the main landmarks in Ascot?

Ascot's landmark is its racecourse. Eagle Farm Racecourse spreads across the low ground below the suburb, one of Brisbane's historic horse-racing grounds and the anchor of the whole quarter. Above it, the ridge streets hold heritage houses, among them Turrawan, a grand timber residence that survives from the suburb's early well-to-do years.

The draw is domestic grandeur. Wide verandahs, deep gardens, and the turf of Eagle Farm give Ascot a character its neighbours Hamilton and Clayfield share only in part.

What is the history of Ascot?

Ascot took shape around the track. Horse racing on the Eagle Farm flats drew Brisbane's money to the ridge above through the later nineteenth century, and large houses followed the sport up the slope. The suburb grew genteel and stayed that way, its avenues lined with the timber mansions of an early moneyed class, Turrawan among the survivors.

Wealth set the pattern early. Along the edges it shares with Hamilton and Clayfield, that older prosperity still shows in the scale of the homes and gardens.

Where is Ascot?

Ascot lies in Brisbane's inner north-east, Queensland, a ridge suburb above the Eagle Farm flats, bordered by Hamilton, Clayfield, and Windsor.
