Ashgrove filled the ridges early. As Brisbane spread north-west from its older centre, timber homes climbed the wooded hills between the tracks to Enoggera and Bardon through the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Churches and schools followed the houses up the slopes, the Ashgrove Methodist Church among the marks the era left.
The pattern held for good. What grew was a settled leafy suburb of verandahed homes, its old roads still linking Red Hill and Alderley across the northern hills.
