Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Khirdalan is a working city, and beds here answer to two things: the Baltika-Baku brewery on its industrial side and the Absheron District offices that the 2006 city grant confirmed. Neither is a sight. Travellers who book in Khirdalan are almost always here for the district it administers or for Baku's museums, which means the choice of street matters less than the direction of the morning drive.
A short drive covers the whole city. Across roughly 47 square kilometres there is no quarter that cuts a guest off from the rest of the city, and the brewery, the municipal offices and the roads toward Baku all sit within the same compact ground. The museum side has the pull.
The National Art Museum of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, the Maiden Tower and the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan belong to Baku rather than to Khirdalan, so a room facing that way shortens every day spent on them. Business runs the other way. Anyone dealing with the Absheron District administration wants the municipal part of Khirdalan, and anyone calling at the Baltika-Baku works, the plant that once gave the city its Khyrdalan name, wants the industrial edge instead.
Both are ordinary streets. Khirdalan does not trade on scenery, and the honest reason to sleep here rather than in Baku is closeness to the district's own business.

What is the history of Khirdalan?
City status came late. The National Assembly of Azerbaijan approved the change on 29 November 2006, and Khirdalan, Xırdalan in Azerbaijani, became a city rather than a settlement of the Absheron District it already administered. Beer came first.
The brewery that trades as Baltika-Baku was known as Khyrdalan, taking the town's name before the town took its rank, and it stands as the largest works of its kind in Azerbaijan. A monument to Hosni Mubarak, then president of Egypt, was raised in Khirdalan in 2007, and a statue of Heydar Aliyev went up in Cairo the following year as the matching half of that exchange. The pairing did not last.
After the Egyptian protests of 2011, the Musavat Party and others in the Azerbaijani opposition called publicly for the Khirdalan monument to be taken down, and it was removed on 8 June 2011 following Mubarak's resignation. That episode is the city's best-documented piece of public history. Everything else in Khirdalan's record runs through the Absheron District around it, through the brewery, and through Baku, whose museums the district's travellers use.

The year runs to the northern calendar. Khirdalan falls inside the temperate band well north of the equator, so its warm stretch lands in the middle of the year and its cold one at either end. Absheron weather is Khirdalan weather.
Nothing divides the city's conditions from the district it administers, and a trip that pairs the Baltika-Baku works with the museums of Baku plans for one season, not two.
How do you get to Khirdalan?
Arrivals come through Baku. The Absheron District wraps the approach to Khirdalan, and most travellers reach the city from that side, since the Baku Zoo, the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex and the museum cluster are the fixed destinations of a stay here. The Baltika-Baku works is the landmark drivers use.
Past it, the district's own roads carry on into the settlements Khirdalan administers.
