What is the history of Sumgayit?
Sumgayit is a city the Soviets built. Where only a few houses had stood by the Caspian, the Soviet state raised a great new town in 1949 to work oil and chemicals, drawing workers from across the country. Industry made the city.
Vast plants for rubber, aluminium, and chemicals rose on the shore, and the town grew fast into the third city of Azerbaijan. The works brought both wealth and harm. Its chemical plants gave the city its living but also fouled its air and water in the Soviet years, a scar it has worked to heal since.
The city turned to its shore. After independence Sumgayit cleaned its coast and laid out a long seaside park and boulevard along the Caspian, and its people took to the beaches and the gardens by the sea. The sea front draws the crowds now.
