Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Three things pull a stay in Savar in different directions: the National Martyrs' Memorial, the Jahangirnagar University campus, and the road back into Dhaka. Each has its own logic. Anyone here for the memorial wants the open ground on that side of the upazila, where the approach and the grounds themselves take up most of a morning and the crowds arrive early on commemorative days.
Campus is quieter. Jahangirnagar University keeps its own rhythm, and the ground around it, down to the university swimming pool, suits longer academic visits better than a monument-facing room ever would. Dhaka remains the third option.
Travellers who intend to spend their days at the Bangladesh National Zoo, the Bangladesh Bank Taka Museum or the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur are better placed at the city end of Savar, since all of those sit on the far side of the 24 kilometres. Choose by purpose, not by comfort. Beds across the 107 square kilometres of the upazila are much of a muchness, and the difference that matters is which of the three destinations you want outside the door in the morning.
Savar rewards the memorial visit above all. That is the reason the upazila appears on itineraries at all, and a room within reach of it is the safest choice for a first trip.

Jahangirnagar University put a resident academic population inside the upazila, and its facilities, down to the swimming pool, are recorded among the named places of Savar. Its distance from the capital does the rest. Twenty-four kilometres northwest of Dhaka is close enough for the city to reach easily and far enough for the memorial to stand on open ground rather than in a street.

Here the year divides in two. Savar sits in the subtropical band north of the equator, so the year swings between a hot stretch and a cooler one, and the open ground at the National Martyrs' Memorial gives little shade in either. The Dhaka pattern applies here.
Twenty-four kilometres of separation change nothing about the weather, and a day at Jahangirnagar University or the Bangladesh National Zoo runs under the same sky as the city.

Savar is a day trip from Dhaka. The 24 kilometres, 15 miles, between the two put the National Martyrs' Memorial within reach of anyone based in the city, and the traffic on that road is the main variable in how long the run takes. Buses and cars share it.
Dhaka District roads tie the upazila to the city's edge, and the same route serves Jahangirnagar University and the memorial alike.
