Three things pull a stay in Savar in different directions: the National Martyrs' Memorial, the Jahangirnagar University campus, and the road back into Dhaka. Each has its own logic. Anyone here for the memorial wants the open ground on that side of the upazila, where the approach and the grounds themselves take up most of a morning and the crowds arrive early on commemorative days.
Campus is quieter. Jahangirnagar University keeps its own rhythm, and the ground around it, down to the university swimming pool, suits longer academic visits better than a monument-facing room ever would. Dhaka remains the third option.
Travellers who intend to spend their days at the Bangladesh National Zoo, the Bangladesh Bank Taka Museum or the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur are better placed at the city end of Savar, since all of those sit on the far side of the 24 kilometres. Choose by purpose, not by comfort. Beds across the 280 square kilometres of the upazila are much of a muchness, and the difference that matters is which of the three destinations you want outside the door in the morning.
Savar rewards the memorial visit above all. That is the reason the upazila appears on itineraries at all, and a room within reach of it is the safest choice for a first trip.
