Mineral springs in the surrounding country make a case for a stay pointed outward, and the ancient Thracian tombs nearby fall on the same side of the decision. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier, Haskovo, keeps the centre worth a walk even on a spa-led trip. Dimitrovgrad is the odd option.
The model city was built from scratch in the communist era, and a night there gives a wholly planned town instead of a grown one, which some travellers will find the more interesting bed of the two. Borders matter for onward plans. Greece and Turkey both lie close to Haskovo, so a night here also suits anyone breaking a longer run between countries rather than stopping for the city alone.
