What is the history of Veliko Tŭrnovo?
Veliko Tŭrnovo rose to greatness as the seat of the Second Bulgarian Empire, whose rulers governed from the Tsarevets Fortress above the Yantra. The rock made a natural stronghold. Between 1185 and 1396 the city was the capital of the Bulgarian lands, its kings crowned in the Holy Forty Martyrs Church and its patriarchs enthroned within the fortress walls, until the empire fell and the medieval city was reduced to ruin.
The Asenevtsi memorial by the river now honours that dynasty. The town revived in the centuries that followed as a merchant centre on the Yantra. Its craftsmen built the tall stone houses that still line the gorge, among them the Sarafkina House and the Hadji Nikoli Inn, and in the national revival Veliko Tŭrnovo became a centre of Bulgarian learning and self-rule.
The past never left. Baldwin's Tower and the partly restored ramparts of the Tsarevets Fortress keep the memory of the medieval capital alive above the modern streets.
