The falls barred the river. At the great falls the boats could go no farther up the Congo, and a town grew at the foot of the cataracts where the river trade broke its journey. The Wagenia fished the rapids.
For ages the Wagenia people set their great wooden traps in the white water of the falls, catching the fish of the river, as they still do. A river station rose here. In colonial times a station and a port grew at the falls, a place of trade deep in the forest, linked to Kinshasa by the long river.
The town grew on the stream. In our own age Kisangani grew into a great river city of the interior, a market of the forest, keeping its falls, its river, and its trees. The falls still thunder above.
