About Les Pâquis
What are the main landmarks in Les Pâquis?
The Brunswick Monument stands on the lakefront. Montbrillant church serves the quarter, and the Église anglaise de Genève and the Église épiscopalienne de l'Emmanuel stand with it. The Contemporary African Art Collection is here, and a monument thanks the Italian immigrants who came to Geneva.
What is the history of Les Pâquis?
Les Pâquis began as pasture outside the fortifications of Geneva, running down to the Léman, and belonged to the commune of Petit-Saconnex. The first built part lies at the north of the present quarter, along the line of the rue de Lausanne, and its people went on driving their beasts out to the pâquis for a time. The fortifications came down from 1850, and Les Eaux-Vives, Plainpalais, La Jonction and Les Pâquis all grew on the ground beyond.

Les Pâquis lies on the right bank of the Léman, between the parks and the rue du Mont-Blanc and between the lake and the railway. The word pâquis is Arpitan for pasture, from paquiér. Annecy has a park of the same root.
