What are the main landmarks in Kuhbach?

Geography is the exhibit here. Kuhbach sits where the Black Forest foothills close in on the Schutter valley, and the stream that gives the valley its name runs fifty-five kilometres from the hills out to the Rhine plain. The road is the spine.

Bundesstraße 415 runs the length of the village and is what ties it to Lahr in one direction and up the valley in the other. Reichenbach is the near neighbour. It adjoins Kuhbach along the valley, and the two together make the upstream end of the Lahr town area.

What is the history of Kuhbach?

The Geroldsecker held this valley. Kuhbach belonged to their lordship, which is the frame the Schutter valley villages sat in through the Middle Ages, and the town of Lahr grew at the mouth of the same valley. Baden came later.

The Grand Duchy of Baden took in the territory, and Kuhbach was one of the small communes it administered from then. Independence lasted until the merger. Kuhbach was a commune in its own right before it became an Ortsteil of Lahr, which is why it still reads as a village with its own core rather than as a suburb.

Size kept it small. About 187 hectares between the Black Forest foothills, the Lahr core and Reichenbach left no room to grow, and the district remains the second smallest in the town.
