Where to stay in Alsbach
The practical side of choosing where to sleep.
Alsbach-Hähnlein is a small residential municipality, and Alsbach is the part of most interest to visitors. Alsbach suits visitors who want a quiet village: unlike neighbouring Seeheim-Jugenheim, it has no road into the Odenwald, which keeps traffic in the village low. It also suits those who come for its castle ruin.
Two tram lines from Darmstadt end in Alsbach.
About Alsbach
What are the main landmarks in Alsbach?
Alsbach's listed monuments include Schloss Alsbach and the Evangelische Kirche Alsbach. Schloss Alsbach is a castle ruin. Gottfried I of Bickenbach built it in 1240, and a citizens' association founded in 1997 has run it on its own since 2000.
Its predecessor was probably a motte near Hähnlein, the Weilerhügel.
What is the history of Alsbach?
Finds show that the Alsbach area was settled in the Neolithic, and Alsbach is first recorded in the Lorsch Codex in the 8th century. A chapel to Saints Catherine and Erasmus was built in 1340, though Alsbach belonged to the parish of Bickenbach until 1529. A Jewish cemetery is recorded from 1423.
Duke Ulrich of Württemberg lived in Alsbach in exile from 1527 to 1534. In 1977 Alsbach and Hähnlein merged into one municipality, renamed Alsbach-Hähnlein in 1978.
Where is Alsbach?
Alsbach lies at the edge of the Odenwald, in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hessen. Alsbach borders Bickenbach, Jugenheim and Balkhausen in Darmstadt-Dieburg, Auerbach and Rodau in the Bergstraße district, and Hähnlein and Sandwiese, which lies to the west. Much of Alsbach's woodland is protected.
The protected area is the Natura 2000 site Kniebrecht, Melibocus and Orbishöhe.
