Wieseck, Wissich in the local speech, runs straight on from the centre of Gießen. The Lahn bounds it, with the Badenburg's restaurant on the riverbank, and the old village core keeps the Poart and the Michaelskirche from the centuries before it joined the city. Anyone after old streets within reach of the centre finds them around those two.

About Wieseck
What are the main landmarks in Wieseck?
The Poart is the emblem of Wieseck. Its gate tower, first recorded in its present form in 1458, is the only surviving part of the old fortifications, and an arrow slit still shows in it. The Michaelskirche probably stands on 8th-century foundations, and the stone base of its square east tower dates from the late 13th century.
On the Lahn, the partly ruined Badenburg, still lived in and serving food, is where Georg Büchner wrote important parts of the Hessischer Landbote in 1833 and 1834.
What is the history of Wieseck?
Wieseck is older than Gießen. The Lorsch Codex names it in 775, when the daughters of Count Cancor gave their property here to Lorsch Abbey, and a church is recorded in 778. A great fire in 1646 left only three houses standing.
In the Weimar years and after the Second World War it was a stronghold of the workers' parties. From 1925 to 1937 Lufthansa flew from the nearby Gießen airfield, and on 1 April 1939 Wieseck became part of Gießen.
