Where to stay in Conrebbersweg
Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Emden proper is where you sleep. Conrebbersweg has no industry, few workshops and few shops, because Harsweg next door carries the shopping for this side of the city. Access is easy enough.
A motorway junction on the A 31 sits at the north-western corner, signed for Pewsum although it stands on Emden ground, and bus line one runs hourly to the main station. Traffic calming keeps the through route slow.
About Conrebbersweg
What are the main landmarks in Conrebbersweg?
A wartime bunker stands at the centre. The Schumacher and Meyer working group of Leer and Emden finished it in 1942, three storeys and room for five hundred and seventy people, and foreign and forced labourers from Italy, France and Belgium were made to build it as at the city's other bunkers. The name is older than the houses.
Conrebbersweg was a royal and trade road from the Knock on the Ems into the middle of East Frisia, running by way of what is now the Hof Doodshörn in Twixlum straight toward Emden. It went by a second name. Robodesweg, a form of Radbodsweg, remembers the legendary Frisian king Radbod, and Fridrich Arends measured the stretch from Doodshörn to Emden at an hour and a quarter for the year 1832.
What is the history of Conrebbersweg?
The settlement was laid out under the Weimar Republic. Building began in the early 1930s and continued under the Nazi government, and a bunker was added at the centre in 1942. Growth resumed in the 1950s.
Little was built after the early 1960s, and the quarter stayed much as it was for three decades. Planning turned back to it in the 1990s. Emden's council had set a rule to keep new housing inside the motorway half-ring around the port city, so as to spare land further out, and Conrebbersweg was where that rule pointed.
The southern extension followed, with some multi-storey blocks among the houses. That expansion drew criticism. Emden was given the NABU's Dinosaur of the Year award in 2021 over the 75 hectares taken in, ground about a metre below sea level that the association described as species-rich wet grassland under near-complete protection.
Where is Conrebbersweg?
Conrebbersweg lies in the north-west of Emden against the neighbouring commune of Hinte, with Twixlum west and Larrelt south-west across open field, Constantia south beyond the Larrelter Tief, and Früchteburg east across the railway.
