This was built as an answer to the tenement. The cooperative that founded it belonged to the Deutsche Gartenstadtgesellschaft, whose stated aim was a new kind of town outside the Mietskasernen, so the fabric here is low houses and gardens rather than blocks and courtyards. Its founders were the tenants.
Factory workers and craftsmen set the cooperative up because the city was not going to, and what they built is still the character of the Ortsbezirk. Ludwigshafen proper holds the hotels.

What are the main landmarks in Gartenstadt?
The plan is the monument. A garden city, in the statutes the founders quoted, is a planned settlement on cheap land held permanently in the community's superior ownership so that speculation in the ground is impossible, and that rule is what shaped every street here. Carl Eicher wrote the argument.
He set out a movement for housing reform in the Pfälzische Post of 14 September 1909 and developed it in the General-Anzeiger, pointing to building leases and share certificates as the way to pay for it. The cooperative itself is the other landmark. Sixteen citizens founded the Baugenossenschaft Gartenstadt Ludwigshafen on 1 December 1909, and it is the body the whole Ortsbezirk grew out of.
What is the history of Gartenstadt?
The city did nothing, so the workers did. Ludwigshafen had been a Gemeinde since 15 April 1853 and a city since 8 November 1859, but like most towns in the empire it showed little appetite for the housing question, ran no housing policy at all until 1906 and set up a housing office only in 1913. Carl Eicher moved first.

Sixteen citizens signed up. The result is one of ten Ortsbezirke. Gartenstadt is counted among them now, which makes it the one part of Ludwigshafen that exists because the people living there built it.
