Kærby began as country ground on the southern side of Aalborg, low land set back from the Limfjord before the city reached it. The water shaped its edge. As Aalborg grew south the quarter filled with housing, the streets rising between the older city and the open ground beyond.
Churches followed the people: the Ansgars Kirke and the Margrethekirken went up to serve the new streets, while the Vandteknisk Museum later recorded the waterworks that supplied them. Kærby settled into its role as a residential quarter of southern Aalborg in northern Denmark.
