What is the history of Hydra?
Hydra became a commune in the administrative division of 1985. Its name means the lion. With Ben Aknoun, Bouzaréah and El Biar it forms the heights of Algiers, and its quarters are among the oldest in the capital, with buildings from the French colonial, Ottoman and earlier periods.
The Sonatrach head office, many foreign embassies and the Ministry of Religious Affairs are here. On 11 December 2007, in the Algiers bombings, an attack on the United Nations refugee agency's office in Hydra killed several people.
