Two names hold the same town. Official use is Bouïra, while the word people here use among themselves is Garanda. The ground has been settled for centuries and passed through the civilisations that held northern Algeria in turn, favoured because it sits on the route between the coastal plains and the interior mountains.

Under French rule the settlement grew as part of the wider network of towns and roads across the north. Independence in 1962 gave it the role it still has, when Bouïra became the administrative centre of Bouïra Province. The route mattered first and the administration came after.

The East-West Highway, also known as Highway A1, ties Bouïra to Algiers, about 80 minutes away in the north-west, and the same road carries the freight that keeps the provincial markets supplied. Rail is the alternative: Gare de Bouira is a stop on the Algiers to Skikda line. No airport serves the town, so flights arrive at Houari Boumediene Airport.
