The name lasted until 1962, when the city became al-Asnam, the first of two changes that between them record the largest breaks in its modern history. Castellum Tingitanum did not vanish so much as go under, and the layering of a Roman settlement, a nineteenth-century foundation, and a modern provincial capital is the most durable thing about Chlef. The second break came on October 10, 1980.
A devastating earthquake struck the city, and in its aftermath the name changed once more, this time to Chlef, taken from the Chelif River that runs past the place and holds the distinction of being the longest river in Algeria. The rebuilt city kept its role as the seat of Chlef Province, and the Chelif River kept its course past it. Geography outlasted politics.
Orléansville and al-Asnam are both gone from the map, while Chlef, alone of the three names, points at something that was here before any of them and will outlast all of them.

Most arrivals come from Algiers. The capital lies roughly 200 kilometres east, and the overland run west is the standard approach to Chlef, which stands on the Chelif River in the north of Algeria. The Wilaya de Chlef takes it from there.
Because the city is the provincial seat, the roads that matter converge on it rather than pass it, and traffic from across Chlef Province ends up on the same few approaches.
