What is the history of Ambato?
Ambato grew as a mountain market. In its high green valley the town rose as a trading place for the fruit and grain of the Andes, and it became known for its writers and its schools. The city gave Ecuador three Juans.
Juan Montalvo, Juan León Mera, and Juan Benigno Vela, all sons of Ambato, wrote and thought for the young nation, and the town was proud to have raised them. An earthquake remade the town. In nineteen forty-nine a great quake leveled Ambato, and the city was rebuilt anew, its cathedral and streets rising modern from the ruins.
A festival marked its recovery. To celebrate the harvest and the town's return, Ambato began the great Festival of Flowers and Fruit, and it grew into the garden city of Ecuador, keeping its orchards, its writers, and its festival. The blossoms still fill the streets each year.
