In Al Fayyum the choice is between a room in the oasis town and one out by the lake. The streets around the centre keep the market, the mosques, and the waterwheels within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the oasis. The wheels turn by the streams.

What is the history of Al Fayyum?
Al Fayyum was a garden of the pharaohs. The kings of old Egypt loved this green oasis, and they dug canals to lead the Nile into it and drain its lake, making it a land of fields and hunting. They worshipped the crocodile here.
In the city of Shedet, the Greeks' Crocodilopolis, the people kept sacred crocodiles for the water god, and the pharaohs built a vast temple-maze the Greeks called the Labyrinth. Greeks and Romans farmed the oasis. Under the Greek and Roman rulers of Egypt the Fayum grew rich in grain and fruit, and its dead were buried with lifelike painted portraits that still astonish the world.
The waterwheels turned on. Down the centuries the great wooden wheels lifted the oasis water to the fields, and Al Fayyum went on as a green farming country of gardens and lakes below the desert. The wheels still creak by the streams.
