Where to stay in Marsá Maţrūḩ

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Water is the whole point. Marsá Maţrūḩ is a port, and a room facing the harbour puts the sea, the front and the town's short walking distances together, which is what brings most people this far west of Alexandria in the first place. The highway runs behind.

Rooms on that side sit nearer the through traffic between the Nile Delta and the Libyan border, and nearer the turning that leads south into the Western Desert. Two roads make the second decision. If your route continues to Siwa Oasis or Bahariya Oasis, the southern highway matters more than the seafront and a bed near the road out saves an awkward start; if the town itself is the destination, stay close to the water and let the Archaeological Museum of Matrouh and the Rommel Museum fill the indoor hours.

Distances are long here. Sallum lies 222 kilometres to the west and Alexandria 240 kilometres to the east, so this is not a place to arrive late without a booking, and which part of town you pick matters less than the decision to stop at all.

About Marsá Maţrūḩ

The coast road explains the town.

What is Marsá Maţrūḩ known for?

Marsá Maţrūḩ stands on the main highway between the Nile Delta and the Libyan border, 240 kilometres west of Alexandria and 222 kilometres east of Sallum, which makes it the one substantial stop along a very long shoreline. Two museums hold the rest. The Rommel Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Matrouh keep what the port shows of its past, in a place that doubles as capital of the Matrouh Governorate.

What are the main landmarks in Marsá Maţrūḩ?

Two museums carry the record. The Rommel Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Matrouh are the collections the town keeps, and between them they account for most of the indoor hours a visitor spends in the Matrouh Governorate. The port does the rest.

Working quays and the coastline either side of them give Marsá Maţrūḩ its shape, while the road west toward Sallum leaves the built-up area almost as soon as it starts.

What is the history of Marsá Maţrūḩ?

Marsá Maţrūḩ owes its history to a junction. The coastal route between the Nile Delta and the Libyan border runs through here, and a second highway strikes south across the Western Desert toward Siwa Oasis and Bahariya Oasis, so a harbour standing at that crossing had every reason to grow into a town. Ports keep long memories.

The Archaeological Museum of Matrouh exists because material accumulated along this shore over a very long period, and a collection was eventually needed to hold it. Modern history left a marker of its own. The Rommel Museum takes its name from a figure of the campaigns fought along this coast, and its presence shows that the ground between Alexandria and Sallum carries a modern record as well as an ancient one.

Administration followed the road. The town became capital of the Matrouh Governorate, which set the offices of a large and thinly settled province in the single place on the coast where the routes already met, 240 kilometres from Alexandria and 222 from Sallum. Even the name is unsettled.

Marsa Matrouh, Marsa Matruh and Marsá Maţrūḩ are one port on one stretch of the shore of Lower Egypt.

Where is Marsá Maţrūḩ?

Sea in front, desert behind. Marsá Maţrūḩ occupies a harbour on the shore of Lower Egypt, with the coastal highway running through the town between the Nile Delta and the Libyan border and the Western Desert opening out to the south. Neighbours are distant.

Alexandria stands 240 kilometres to the east and Sallum 222 kilometres to the west, which leaves the Matrouh Governorate with long empty stretches on either side of its capital.

What is the climate of Marsá Maţrūḩ?

The sea and the Western Desert pull opposite ways. Marsá Maţrūḩ sits on the coast in the subtropical band north of the equator, so its seasons arrive in the northern order, with the warm stretch falling through the middle months of the year. Inland the balance shifts.

The southern highway toward Siwa Oasis leaves the moderating water behind within a short distance, which is why conditions at the harbour and conditions out on that road are not the same thing.

How do you get to Marsá Maţrūḩ?

One highway does most of the work. The main coast road between the Nile Delta and the Libyan border passes through Marsá Maţrūḩ, putting Alexandria 240 kilometres to the east and Sallum 222 kilometres to the west along the same line. A second road climbs south.

It crosses the Western Desert toward Siwa Oasis and Bahariya Oasis, which is the approach used by anyone reaching the coast from inland rather than along it.
