Hornhattula, Porvoo — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Reaching out along the western margin of Porvoo across the field-and-forest ground of Uusimaa, Hornhattula reads as a lived-in corner rather than a stop on the visitor's circuit of this river town in southern Finland.

Fields lay here long before streets. The river core of Porvoo flourished around its wharves and the slope under Porvoon tuomiokirkko while the western ground that became Hornhattula stayed farmland on the edge of Uusimaa for generations. Building reached it in the modern era.

As the town pushed west of its medieval heart, homes spread across these outer fields, and Hornhattula settled in as one of the residential corners of this old river town in southern Finland.

Hornhattula lies on the western flank of Porvoo. Houses and yards stretch across gently rising ground away from the river, on the side of the town where the closely built quarters of Uusimaa thin toward fields and forest. The core sits eastward.

From this western edge the streets fall back toward the old town of Porvoo and the cathedral quarter of Näsi, all part of the river town in southern Finland.
