A stone cross came first. The name records it, and the settlement on the ridge was made an ecclesiastical parish in 1845, within the Diocese of Wakefield and inside what became the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale. During the English Civil War the ridge mattered.
Halifax stood as a Royalist stronghold, King Cross served as a key outpost above it, and Parliamentarians held parts of the Calder Valley below.
