Merchant City, Glasgow — Area Guide & Where to Stay

The Merchant City runs east from George Square to Glasgow Cross, a central quarter of Glasgow renamed during the urban renewal of the 1980s.

About Merchant City

Where to stay in Merchant City

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

George Square at one end, Glasgow Cross at the other. Between them the Merchant City packs the Gallery of Modern Art, the Tron Theatre and the Tolbooth Steeple into walking distance, which is why a traveller who wants the central area of Glasgow on foot books here rather than out in the districts. Cathedral Street carries the Apostolic Church.

The medieval street plan on the eastern fringe stretches north towards neighbouring Townhead.

About Merchant City

What are the main landmarks in Merchant City?

Few Glasgow districts hold this many. The Gallery of Modern Art, The Lighthouse and the Sharmanka Kinetic Gallery cover the exhibition side, while St Andrew's Cathedral, St George's-Tron Church, St Andrew's-by-the-Green and the Collegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Anne carry the older fabric. The Tolbooth Steeple marks Glasgow Cross.

Tron Theatre, the Glasgow Women's Library, the Glasgow Police Museum, the Scott Monument and Maggie McIver's Gate fill in the rest.

What is the history of Merchant City?

The name is recent; the ground is not. Urban renewal by the Scottish Development Agency and the city council gave this part of central Glasgow the Merchant City label in the 1980s, applied to the stretch that begins at George Square and reaches east to Glasgow Cross. Part of the original medieval street plan survives on the eastern fringe.

It stretches north towards Townhead.

Where is Merchant City?

The Merchant City occupies part of the central area of Glasgow between George Square and Glasgow Cross, with Townhead beyond its eastern fringe.
