About Yorkhill
What are the main landmarks in Yorkhill?
Kelvin Hall, which housed the Glasgow Museum of Transport from 1987 to 2010 before the collection moved to the nearby Riverside Museum in Partick, stands in Yorkhill. Medicine keeps the name known. The area remains the site of the West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital.
The rest is housing, mostly sandstone tenements put up in the early 20th century by the Overnewton Building Company.
What is the history of Yorkhill?
The ancient name of these lands was Over Newton, and Roman coins, rings and Samian pottery turned up on the summit in 1868. A merchant built a mansion on the hill in 1805. From 1813 Andrew Gilbert gathered the lands under the name Yorkhill, and Yorkhill Quay followed in 1868.
Then medicine came. In 1907 the estate was sold to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, whose new hospital opened in 1914, and the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital joined it in 1966.
