Bellsquarry's primary school was built in 1909 to designs by James Graham Fairley, the Elm Tree Inn on the village square reopened in 2005 as a pub and restaurant, and Bellsquarry Village Hall belongs to the same 19th and early 20th-century layer. Some of the old limestone kilns still stand around the area. Murieston House and Limefield House are close by, and Brucefield Farm, a farmhouse of about 1800, is now a restaurant.
What is the history of Bellsquarry?
The name comes from a limestone quarry and its owner, a Mr Bell. The quarry was working by 1782 and ran into the early 20th century, then served as a rubbish dump before it was tidied and covered. Livingston came next.
In 1962 Bellsquarry, with Livingston Village and Livingston Station, became part of the new town of Livingston, and it keeps several buildings from its village years.
