Where to stay in Mytilene

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

The harbour arm decides most of it. Mytilene wraps around a working port and the castle headland stands over its northern end, so a room on the quay side puts the ferry berth, the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene and the climb to the Castle of Mytilene inside one walk. That side fills first.

Epano Skala, the older quarter behind the northern anchorage where the Hellenistic stoa lies, keeps a different character, narrower and a few minutes further from the ferry ramp. Makrys Gialos runs out along the shore south of the port, where a Roman fish tank cut into the rock still marks the waterline, and rooms there trade the short walk into town for open water at the door. Beds thin out fast beyond it.

Ano Chalikas climbs the slope inland, away from the water altogether, with the Church of Ayioi Pateres marking the top of it. You want the quay if a ferry timetable governs the day, and the outer shore if nothing does. Demand comes from two directions.

Term arrivals for the University of the Aegean draw on the same stock of rooms as the summer crossings into Lesbos, so the pressure on the quay side rarely lifts for long, and the slope addresses absorb what the harbour cannot.

About Mytilene

What is Mytilene known for?

The island's official business passes through here. Mytilene is the port of Lesbos and the administrative seat of the North Aegean Region, and the University of the Aegean runs its headquarters from the town, which puts term traffic alongside the shipping. The Castle of Mytilene closes the harbour.

Older ground surfaces almost anywhere the streets are opened: the Ancient theatre of Mytilene on the slope, the Hellenistic stoa at Epano Skala, the Chorafa mosaics. Founding runs to the 11th century BC.

What are the main landmarks in Mytilene?

The castle is the fixed point. The Castle of Mytilene holds the headland, and below it the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, the Theophilos Museum and the Museum-Library of Stratis Eleftheriadis Teriade split the collections between excavated stone, painting and print. Churches carry the rest.

The Church of Agios Symeon, the Church of Ayioi Theodoroi and the Church of Ayios Georgios stand among mansions the register lists by owner, while the Ancient theatre of Mytilene keeps its seats cut into the slope above.

What is the history of Mytilene?

Founding runs back to the 11th century BC, which makes Mytilene older than anything standing in it and old enough that the earliest part of the record survives as cut stone rather than paper. The theatre belongs to the Greek town. Rome left more: an epavli off odo Nikomideias, a fish tank cut at Makrys Gialos, a later building among the streets, and the Chorafa mosaics.

Quarrying went on at Moria. Christian Mytilene left the Martyrio and a set of churches the town still keeps in use, among them the Church of Agios Symeon, the Church of Ayioi Theodoroi and the Church of Ayios Georgios. The castle came after.

The Castle of Mytilene took the headland above the water and fixed the shape of the port that grew under it, with Epano Skala on one side of the promontory and the open shore on the other. Merchant money built the mansions the register still lists by their owners: the House of Pavlis, the House of Katsanis, the House of Athanasios Fortounas and the House of James Aristarchi. Two collections took private names as well.

The Theophilos Museum and the Museum-Library of Stratis Eleftheriadis Teriade joined the older holdings, while the University of the Aegean and the offices of the North Aegean Region gave the town the administrative weight it carries over the rest of Lesbos.

Where is Mytilene?

Lesbos is the setting. Mytilene takes the island's south-eastern corner, on a harbour open to the Aegean, with the castle headland dividing the northern anchorage at Epano Skala from the shore that runs south past Makrys Gialos. The municipal ground covers some 107 km².

Slopes climb inland from the water and Ano Chalikas sits up on one of them, while the quarry ground at Moria lies further out, clear of the built-up streets.

What is the climate of Mytilene?

The Aegean sets the limits here. Mytilene stands on open water at the south-eastern edge of Lesbos, so the sea holds the winter mild and takes some of the edge off a summer that would otherwise sit still over the harbour. Rain belongs to the cold months.

The dry stretch runs long, which is why the slopes behind Ano Chalikas brown off well before the crossings from the mainland ease off.

How do you get to Mytilene?

The ferry lands in the town itself. Mytilene is the main port of Lesbos, so a crossing of the North Aegean ends at the quay under the castle rather than at an outlying berth, and the streets start where the ramp does. Everything on the island routes back through here.

Road traffic from the villages converges on the harbour, and the University of the Aegean pulls its own term arrivals through the same gate.
