Where to stay in Tung Chung
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Tung Chung offers two kinds of ground. The new town holds most of the beds, its blocks arranged around Man Tung Road, where the Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre marks the built-up core of the northwestern Lantau Island coast. Base yourself there for convenience.
Everything the new town has, its shops and halls and the road out, sits within a few streets of the rest, and the older shoreline is close enough to reach on foot. Tung Chung Bay lies below the newer blocks, and the water is what the whole area was built around long before the town appeared, first for fishing and then for defence. Ma Wan Chung keeps the older grain.
The fishing village that preceded the town stood beside Tung Chung Bay and along the delta and lower courses of the Tung Chung River, and that stretch of water still orders the ground there. Rooms are few on that side. Farther out, Mui Wo and Peng Chau carry their own names within the Islands District, and a traveller basing there swaps the new town's convenience for a quieter address.
Lantau Island absorbs the distance, and the new town remains the one address with real choice. Reserve early, whichever side you choose.

What is Tung Chung known for?
Tung Chung guarded the northwestern shore of Lantau Island as a defence stronghold under the Ming and the Qing, held against pirates and foreign military alike. The village fished Tung Chung Bay. That older settlement lay along the delta and lower courses of the Tung Chung River and Ma Wan Chung, and the new town raised over it counts among the most recent in Hong Kong.
What are the main landmarks in Tung Chung?
Six halls make the list. Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre is the one carrying the town's own name, standing among the new-town blocks near the northwestern shore of Lantau Island. Mui Wo Sports Centre and Peng Chau Sports Centre belong to other Islands District names.
The Jockey Club Tuen Mun Butterfly Beach Sports Centre, Siu Lun Sports Centre and Yau Oi Sports Centre carry Tuen Mun addresses instead, which puts them well outside Tung Chung itself.
What is the history of Tung Chung?
Defence came first here. Under the Ming and the Qing, Tung Chung served as an important stronghold on the northwestern coast of Lantau Island, held against pirates and against foreign military reaching this part of Hong Kong. Fishing carried the rest.
The settlement stood beside Tung Chung Bay and along the delta and the lower courses of the Tung Chung River and Ma Wan Chung, a rural village on the water rather than a town. That stronghold existed for the coast itself, since the approaches to Lantau Island through these waters were what needed watching. The new town came late.
Tung Chung counts among the most recent of Hong Kong's new towns, raised over ground that had been rural for the whole of its recorded past, and the change reset what the name refers to. Man Tung Road belongs to that phase. The Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre and the blocks around it are new-town work, while Ma Wan Chung and the riverside keep the older village outline that the building did not erase.
Two layers sit side by side. Peng Chau and Mui Wo stayed separate names within the same district, a reminder that the Islands District is a scatter of places rather than one built-up mass.
Where is Tung Chung?
Lantau Island shapes everything here. Tung Chung occupies the northwestern coast of that island, where Tung Chung Bay opens and the Tung Chung River reaches the sea through a delta beside Ma Wan Chung. The Islands District takes it in.
Being both coastal and insular puts the area in the tropics north of the equator, so the green holds through the year and the water is never far from any part of the town.
What is the climate of Tung Chung?
Open water does the tempering here. Tung Chung faces open water at Tung Chung Bay, and that exposure keeps the coastal edge of Lantau Island a little easier than ground shut in behind hills through the hottest stretch of the year. Rain arrives in the warm months.
The area lies in the tropics north of the equator, which means humidity rather than cold is what a visitor notices, and the delta of the Tung Chung River sits low enough to feel it.
How do you get to Tung Chung?
Getting here means crossing to Lantau Island. Tung Chung sits on the island's northwestern coast, so any approach from the rest of Hong Kong ends by reaching that shore, and the new town around Man Tung Road is where an arrival puts a traveller down. Man Tung Road organises the town.
Within the Islands District the other names, Mui Wo and Peng Chau, stand apart from Tung Chung, and reaching them from here is a separate journey rather than a walk.
