Debrecen grew on the open Great Hungarian Plain into the largest Hungarian city of the eighteenth century and the great stronghold of Hungarian Protestantism. Faith shaped the town. The Reformed Great Church and the Debrecen Reformed College made it the seat of Calvinist learning, drawing scholars from across the plain, and its market wealth built the wide streets of Hajdú-Bihar County's seat.
Twice the city stepped into the national story as more than a regional centre. It became the capital of Hungary. During the revolution of 1848 to 1849 the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty was declared inside the Reformed Great Church, and Debrecen served as the seat of the nation.
Near the end of World War II, in 1944 to 1945, it again held the capital as the front moved west. Through these turns the church on the square stayed the fixed point of the city. The founding of the University of Debrecen later added a centre of modern learning to the old Calvinist heart, binding the city's history from the plain market to the campus at the edge of the Great Forest.
