Veszprém was a royal and holy city from the start. It grew as one of the first bishoprics of the Christian kingdom of Hungary, and its bishops won the right to crown and serve the queens, so the town became known as the city of queens. The castle held the church's power.
On its high ridge rose the cathedral, the bishop's palace, and the chapel of Queen Gizella, the wife of the first king, and the hill became the heart of the town. War and fire tested the hill. The Turks and later sieges wrecked the castle more than once, and the townsfolk rebuilt it each time, raising at last the fine baroque quarter and the fire tower that stand over the town.
The town settled into a quiet life. It became a market and church town of the Balaton country, keeping its old ridge and its steep streets. The castle quarter still crowns the rock.
