Where to stay in Gorontalo

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Gorontalo has no rival in its province. As the only city of Gorontalo Province, it holds the beds, the offices and the universities, so a traveller working anywhere in this part of Sulawesi ends up sleeping here whether the destination is the city or not. The centre is where the choice is.

Rooms cluster near the provincial institutions rather than out toward Otanaha Fortress, which stands clear of the built-up ground and suits a visit rather than a base. The museums pull in the other direction. Anyone staying for the Popa Eyato Museum, the Museum Purbakala Provinsi Gorontalo and the Ampibi Aircraft Landing Museum will want to be near the middle, since the three are spread across the city rather than gathered on one street.

Gereja Santo Kristoforus marks a third option. The church quarter around it gives a quieter base than the administrative streets, and the walk from there to the provincial offices is short. Choice thins outside the city.

Gorontalo Province has no second town of this size, so leaving the municipal boundary means giving up the range of rooms that the capital of the province supports.

About Gorontalo

Otanaha Fortress carries the oldest name.

What is Gorontalo known for?

The fortress is the fixed point of Gorontalo's list, and around it sit the Popa Eyato Museum and the Museum Purbakala Provinsi Gorontalo, which between them hold the provincial collections. Aircraft feature too. The Ampibi Aircraft Landing Museum records the landing of an amphibious Catalina, an episode given both a museum and a monument in a city that otherwise tells its story through stone and church buildings.

What are the main landmarks in Gorontalo?

Otanaha Fortress heads the list. Its stone predates the museums by a long way, and a visitor with only an afternoon in Gorontalo usually spends it there rather than among the provincial collections. Four museums follow.

The Popa Eyato Museum, the Museum Purbakala Provinsi Gorontalo, the Ampibi Aircraft Landing Museum and the Museum dan Monumen Pendaratan Pesawat Ampibi Catalina divide the city's record between archaeology and an aircraft landing the city commemorates twice, while Gereja Santo Kristoforus stands for the built heritage in between.

What is the history of Gorontalo?

The city dates itself to 1728. Gorontalo carries that year as its founding, which places the settlement well before the provincial arrangements that describe it and long before the museums that record them. Otanaha Fortress carries the physical evidence.

The stonework above the city is the part of the record a visitor can put a hand on, and it does more to convey the age of Gorontalo than the formal name Kotapraja Gorontalo ever will. The province is much younger than the city. Gorontalo Province was separated from North Sulawesi on 5 December 2000, and the city became its capital at that moment, having previously been part of the older province.

That change concentrated everything here. As the largest settlement and the only city of the new province, Gorontalo took the political, economic and educational weight of the whole territory, including most of its higher education and one of the two public universities. The museums date from later.

The Popa Eyato Museum, the Museum Purbakala Provinsi Gorontalo and the Ampibi Aircraft Landing Museum belong to the years in which a young province set about recording its own past.

Where is Gorontalo?

The island's north holds it. Gorontalo sits in northern Sulawesi close enough to the equator that the sun keeps much the same track through the year, and the province it heads occupies that stretch of ground. North Sulawesi lies alongside.

The two provinces were one until the separation, so the line between them is administrative rather than physical, and the country on either side of it reads much the same.

What is the climate of Gorontalo?

The equator runs almost through it. Gorontalo lies barely north of that line, which removes seasons from the calendar altogether and leaves a year of even warmth broken only by how heavily the rain falls in a given month. Warmth does not let up.

Nothing in the position of this part of Sulawesi produces a cool season, so the practical question for a visitor is not when to come but how much shelter from rain to carry.

How do you get to Gorontalo?

Everything provincial funnels through the city. Gorontalo is the only city of its province, so the roads of this part of Sulawesi converge on it and any arrival in the province is likely to pass through the capital first. North Sulawesi supplies the overland route.

Travel from the older province crosses the boundary drawn in 2000 and continues into Gorontalo, while the museums and Otanaha Fortress are close enough to the centre that no further transport is needed.
