The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Banjarbaru holds fewer rooms than its new standing suggests, and the corridor it sits on counts for more than any single street. Martapura adjoins it to the north, inside Banjar Regency, and is effectively continuous with the city, so a bed taken there behaves like a bed here for everything except a walk to the provincial offices. Banjarmasin is the other end.
That city stands some 35 km off with far more choice, and the run between the two is short enough that visitors regularly sleep in one and spend the working day in the other. Inside Banjarbaru itself the useful cluster is the civic one, within reach of Lambung Mangkurat Museum and the departments that arrived with the provincial seat in 2022. It suits you if the trip is official rather than scenic.
Cahaya Bumi Selamat Park gives the greener alternative, with quieter residential streets behind it and Museum PDAM Intan Banjar near enough to fill an idle hour. The Komet Windpump and Tugu Komet stand on the same short circuit. Banjarbakula, the metropolitan belt gathering Banjarbaru, Martapura, and Banjarmasin, is the frame worth booking inside, because a room anywhere along it puts the rest of the region within an easy drive.

What is the history of Banjarbaru?
Banjarbaru is a made city. Its founding is dated to 1975, which puts nearly all of its fabric inside living memory, and the ground it stands on lies inland, some 35 km southeast of Banjarmasin, the largest city of South Kalimantan. Nothing here is ancient.
What the town holds instead is a record of decisions taken quickly: a museum given the province's own name in Lambung Mangkurat Museum, a zero-kilometre marker, and junctions dressed up as monuments. The decisive change came in 2022. In that year the seat of South Kalimantan moved from Banjarmasin to Banjarbaru, handing the administrative role to the younger and smaller of the two while the older city kept its size and its trade.
Banjarbaru remains the province's second city. The change is close enough in time that the pair still operate together, joined through Martapura in Banjar Regency, which reaches the city's edge and in practice continues its streets. Banjarbakula gathers the result.
The metropolitan area binds Banjarbaru, Martapura, and Banjarmasin into one working region, so the transfer reorganised authority without moving many people, and the province's older story stayed where it had always been while its paperwork moved down the road.

What is the climate of Banjarbaru?
Warmth is the constant here. Lying inland from Banjarmasin, Banjarbaru shares the wet tropical pattern of South Kalimantan, where the difference between one month and the next is measured in rainfall rather than in temperature and the humid air rarely eases for long. Rain is a matter of degree.
Genuinely dry weeks do occur, but the year reads better as heavier and lighter rain than as two separate seasons.
How do you get to Banjarbaru?
Approaches run through Banjarmasin. The larger city stands some 35 km off, and the last leg into Banjarbaru is a road transfer over ground that stays built up for almost the whole distance. Martapura sits on the same run.
Anything crossing the Banjarbakula belt passes these three in turn, and once inside the city the Banjarbaru Four-Way Roundabout is the junction most local directions are given from.
