Where to stay in Banjarmasin

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Banjarmasin covers little ground for the number of people on it, packed onto low delta land between the Barito and the Martapura, so nearly everything a visitor wants falls within a short ride of the middle. Rooms concentrate there too. The blocks around Holy Family Cathedral and the Waja Sampai Kaputing Museum hold the widest choice, keep the water close, and leave the commercial streets walkable for anyone who does not mind the heat.

Kampung Arab is the atmospheric option, an old quarter whose name records who settled it, and it suits you if a dense lived-in street matters more than a modern lobby. Kelayan lies further out. The parish church there, Paroki Santa Perawan Maria Yang Terkandung Tanpa Noda, Kelayan, marks a residential district whose beds are few and mostly simple, taken by people with business in that part of town rather than by sightseers.

Families sometimes base near Taman Satwa Jahri Saleh for the animal park, and GPIB Maranatha Banjarmasin stands close to the older commercial streets, so the real decision comes down to how much of the river a visitor wants outside the window and how far from the centre they will sleep.

About Banjarmasin

Water lays out the whole city.

What is Banjarmasin known for?

Banjarmasin stands on a delta island near the confluence of the Barito and the Martapura, and the wet ground has shaped its streets, its trade, and its long standing as the centre of Banjarese culture. It was the seat of the Sultanate of Banjar. That inheritance still shows in quarters such as Kampung Arab, and in a compact set of stops that runs from Holy Family Cathedral to the Kayuh Baimbai Museum.

What are the main landmarks in Banjarmasin?

Holy Family Cathedral gives the city its best-known church front. Two museums carry the local record, the Waja Sampai Kaputing Museum and the Kayuh Baimbai Museum, and between them they hold the material of Banjarese life on the delta. Kampung Arab is a landmark in itself.

Add GPIB Maranatha Banjarmasin, the Kelayan parish church of Paroki Santa Perawan Maria Yang Terkandung Tanpa Noda, and the enclosures at Taman Satwa Jahri Saleh, and the short list is complete.

What is the history of Banjarmasin?

Banjarmasin's founding is dated to 1526. From that year the settlement on the delta island grew as the capital of the Sultanate of Banjar, and its position near the meeting of the Barito and the Martapura put it at the junction of the routes running inland from the coast. Commerce carried it from there.

The city became the centre of Banjarese culture and stayed the largest place on this part of Borneo through every later change of authority. Rivers remained the organising fact. Building on a delta island means low ground, tidal water, and a street plan that answers to channels rather than to contours, which is why Banjarmasin reads differently from any inland Kalimantan city.

Its churches and museums record the mixture that the river trade brought: Holy Family Cathedral, GPIB Maranatha Banjarmasin, and the quarter still called Kampung Arab. Provincial status ended in 2022. On 15 February of that year the capital of South Kalimantan passed to Banjarbaru, leaving Banjarmasin the province's largest city without the administrative role it had held for centuries, and the third most populous on Borneo.

The museums keep the older account. Waja Sampai Kaputing Museum and Kayuh Baimbai Museum hold what the sultanate and the river trade left behind.

Where is Banjarmasin?

Banjarmasin occupies a delta island near the confluence of the Barito and the Martapura, in South Kalimantan. The ground is low and wet. Channels and tidal water thread the built-up area, so the city covers a small territory by Kalimantan standards while holding more people than anywhere else in the province, and the edge of the city is water at least as much as it is road.

Borneo has only two larger cities.

What is the climate of Banjarmasin?

The delta keeps the air wet. Banjarmasin runs hot through the whole year, and the saturated ground between the Barito and the Martapura holds humidity so steadily that even the hot season brings rain rather than a break from it. Nothing here is properly dry.

Warmth shifts little from month to month, which leaves rainfall as the only real marker of the calendar.

How do you get to Banjarmasin?

Rivers still do part of the work. Banjarmasin sits where the Barito and the Martapura meet, and traffic on both remains a normal way to move goods and people through a city whose roads have to bridge water at almost every turn. Roads run out toward Banjarbaru.

That link carries much of the province's official movement since the capital shifted in 2022, and it is the usual overland approach onto the delta island.
