Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Rooms there are fewer. Out toward Tangkiling, on the road that leaves the built-up area for the trees, lodging thins to a handful of simple places taken almost entirely by people making an early start into Tangkiling Forest rather than by anyone spending the day in town. Palangka Raya is young. The city is dated to 1957, a modern creation rather than a settlement that grew slowly along a trade route, and the roundabouts organising its centre still show how deliberately the whole arrangement was set out. The rivers were already there.
Between the Kahayan and the Sabangau, Central Kalimantan gained a capital on ground that had been forest, and the forest was never fully cleared from the municipality drawn around it.
